Excursions

ELLI Excursions are a great way to get out and experience more than you would at your average conference.  Our excursions are always connected to the conference theme,have a takeaway message and reflection time. Excursions are a key element to what makes ELLI unique and stand out from other conferences.

This year's excursions are connected to our theme Fostering Better Education and Better Communities with Experiential Education. You will be emerged in experiences focused on religion, culture, history, genealogy, and finding a sense of place within your community.

Park City History

Join us as we visit the Park City Museum at 528 Main Street to view exhibits through a guided tour. We will also take a stroll along historic Main Street. Park City has a number of historic homes and buildings that stretch back to its founding as a mining town.

Participants will learn about Park City's unique history and rich architecture while getting some exercise strolling up the city's steep and attractive Main Street. Participants will see numerous restaurants, stores, and other attractions that could enhance their ELLI conference experience.

Creating Inclusive Communities through Behavior Management and Sports

This excursion will combine two National Abilities Center workshops into one and will be on the following two topics:

Inclusion in Sport

The “Inclusion in Sport” training will cover utilizing best-practice standards, learning how to easily incorporate students with adaptive needs into already existing sports teams, and other options of how to work with adaptive organizations to provide opportunities for success in sport and recreation.  Sports covered in this training include Track and Field, wheelchair tennis, Pickleball, cycling, and alpine skiing (depending on time).  

Behavior Management

The “Behavior Management” training covers everything from tips & tricks reinforcing appropriate behaviors within the classroom to ability specific activities for engagement. This training utilizes the development of motivators and includes tools for developing esteem building rewards and consequences targeting specific behaviors.

Bio-Discovery Excursion

Bio-Discovery Excursion on the Swaner Preserve. Attendees will be introduced to the iNaturalist app, and collect information about the plants and animals that we observe.  Excursion lasts 1-2 hours, on designated trails, fairly low impact walking.

  • Binoculars and/or Magnifying Glass

Olympic Park

This excursion is about teamwork and problem-solving. Teamwork and problem solving are not only important for students in the classroom but are skills that will help students succeed in their professional lives. 

 

Canyon Course

This intermediate-level ropes course is designed to test one’s abilities with log traverses, swinging elements, and problem-solving features. Participants should be prepared to be at heights up to 25 feet in the air where their agility, balance, and coordination will be tested.

 

Rules and Safety Information: 

  • Participants must weigh a minimum of 45 lbs and a maximum of 275 lbs.

  • Participants must be able to pull themselves back onto the element in the case of a fall.

  • No open-toe shoes or shoes without heel straps. No handheld objects. Secure loose clothing, hats, hair, and personal articles.

  • This activity is not recommended for guests who are pregnant or for those with high blood pressure; back, neck, or bone injury; heart conditions; recent surgery; or any physical or mental ailment.

House of Worship Speedfaithing & Interfaith Leadership

This excursion focuses on visiting a variety of houses of worship including an Islamic mosque, Sikh Gurdwara, and Buddhist temple. At each house of worship we will have a layperson of the faith and a leader in the faith discuss a couple of things all engaged citizens should know about their faith and worldview. Between each house of worship a discussion of shared values will take place on the bus. Upon return we will ask participants to reflect on how their students’ religious identities intersect their specific discipline and influence their learning.

Salt Lake City Family History Library

Salt Lake is the Genealogy Capital of the World. In the Family History Library, participants can begin a journey to discover who they are. All of us have a story, and our stories stretch back for generations. After participants receive a brief orientation, they will enter the name and birth date/death date of at least one ancestor and discover what information has already been found regarding their family.

Note: Participants will need to come prepared with the name and birth date/death date of at least one ancestor.

Alpine Excursion

Learn how to design, organize and execute field experiments pertaining to Human Physiology at the Park City Mountain Resort. High West Distillery Tour

This excursion will allow participants to enjoy a guided tour of an award-winning and working distillery set in a beautiful location. High West Distillery was founded in Park City in 2009, the first legal distillery opened in Utah since 1870. Their original location remains an excellent "saloon" and restaurant in Park City.

Tour of Historic Park City Mainstreet

Enjoy a leisurely tour of the Park City Mainstreet where we will be walking Mainstreet and enjoying the historic architecture. At the end of the tour, there is an option to participate in a tour of the Park City History Museum for an additional $10.
